Charging your smartphone wireless is really convenient. Put your phone on the pad and that’s it. But, does it work with all smartphones? Which one should I choose to charge mine? Let’s find out.
Charging your smartphone wireless is really simple. All you need is the right phone and the right Qi charger.
But at this point you may be wondering how this technology works, what Qi means and in the end how to choose the right combination, smartphone / charger.
Let’s start with the smartphone.
Maybe you have not specifically chosen it with this feature, but if you look at the specifications of your smartphone and find the Qi compatibility indicated, you already have the right phone in your hand. Not all smartphones have this feature, but now there are really many that allow wireless charging. Even at Apple, with the iPhone 8 and X models there is finally the possibility of wireless charging.
How Qi battery chargers work
Wireless chargers use electromagnetic induction to transfer the energy generated by the charging base directly to the phone’s battery. I will not go into the details of the physical principles that govern this phenomenon, however the mechanism is similar to that of induction cookers.
The mechanism explained leads to the conclusion that the greater the electromagnetic field generated, the greater the amount of energy transferred. And this is certainly true, however the dimensions of the battery charger are not directly proportional to the force generated, because to reduce the risk of damage to things and people, the charging devices are limited by the manufacturers.
From the organizations committed to improving and perfecting this technology (at the moment there are two very large ones) different standards have been born including a standard called Qi, currently the most used by the most important smartphone manufacturers. It is this standard that defines the technical specifications of the components used for the manufacture of telephones and battery chargers, as well as defines the operational safety specifications of the devices.
The Qi Battery Charger
These battery chargers are mostly made up of a base, on which the device to be charged will be placed, and the electric wire to connect them to the network or to the PC. When they come into contact with the device to be charged, they are activated automatically, starting their work. In some cases they are equipped with LEDs that light up when the transmitter and receiver come into contact.
These chargers can be made with the most different shapes and for the most part they are flat so as to support the device to be charged horizontally.
They can also be made with multiple or single transmitters, a feature that does not, however, have a direct correlation with the charging speed and performance of the device.
But Which Charger Should I Choose?
The choice in this case will mainly be based on the aesthetics and ease of use of the product. The variety of shapes and colors will guarantee you a truly wide choice. But some technical aspects still need to be considered.
The technical data to be observed for the choice are mainly related to the maximum voltage and the compatibility of the standard with your smartphone. If thresholds are indicated for your smartphone, check that they are not exceeded.
The right compatibility of features between devices will guarantee you an effective and fast recharge, without risking damaging them.
That said, you just have to look for the device that’s right for you.
Do you think everything seems too simple? Indeed it is: it is just that simple!
